When you’re facing an unexpected pregnancy, talking with friends and family can feel intimidating. How will they react? What will they think?
Before discussing abortion or any other pregnancy options, it helps to slow down, gather facts, and consider what you want to do.
Visit Alpha Center for support and a place to think through your next steps before inviting others into the conversation.
Start by Verifying Your Pregnancy
Before sharing the news, get as much information as you can. A home pregnancy test can be a helpful first step, but an ultrasound can give you important medical information that a pregnancy test alone cannot provide.
An ultrasound can show how far along you are in your pregnancy, whether your pregnancy is progressing (not miscarried), and your pregnancy’s location. In some cases, a pregnancy can develop outside the uterus, called an ectopic pregnancy. An ectopic pregnancy needs immediate medical attention.
Having an ultrasound ahead of time helps you understand your situation clearly and whether or not you’re truly pregnant with a progressing pregnancy.
Consider Your Options and Desires
Whatever you are considering, whether that be abortion, parenting, or adoption, it is important to understand what you want before hearing outside opinions. This will help prevent confusion and distraction as friends and family begin sharing their opinions and concerns with you.
They may feel very strongly about one option, but remember, your voice matters most.
Prepare for the Conversation
Talking about pregnancy decisions with people close to you can be difficult, especially when you want them to be happy with your choice.
Think ahead about what you want to say, what questions you are willing to answer, and what kind of support you are asking for.
Many women have found it helpful to speak with a caring team member at Alpha Center. We can help you put your feelings into words and prepare for emotional conversations.
Protect Your Peace and Safety
Even when friends and family are not trying to be pushy, strong opinions can still feel heavy. Do not let yourself be pressured into any decision. This is a major decision, and you have the final say.
If a conversation becomes hostile, threatening, or frightening, get to a safe place and contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline or dial 911.
