A prenatal ultrasound is an important step in confirming your pregnancy. You may feel pressured into making a quick decision as you face an unexpected pregnancy, but it’s vital to not skip this crucial step.
How An Ultrasound Works
An ultrasound is a painless imaging technique that uses high-frequency sound waves to produce an image of the inside of your uterus.
During an ultrasound at our center, our medical personnel applies a gel-like substance to your abdomen, which helps transmit sound waves. A hand-held device called a transducer is rubbed over the gel and records the echoes of the sound waves it picks up. These echoes create the image you can see on the monitor.
Do I Need An Ultrasound?
Yes! An ultrasound is vital to determine what choices you have and it can also alert you to any complications. It is a necessary step of the pregnancy verification process, as it’s the only way to verify three different aspects of your pregnancy, including:
- The viability of your pregnancy: Is there growth and a heartbeat?
- The location of your pregnancy: Did implantation occur inside or outside of your uterus?
- The gestational age: How far along are you?
At Alpha Center, our limited obstetrical ultrasounds are performed to evaluate all of these pregnancy components so you can get the answers you’re looking for. A board-certified physician reviews each ultrasound report.
